Astrakhan hotels

Astrakhan, the administrative centre of the Astrakhan region, is located on the islands of the Volga river delta. For the first time the city was mentioned in chronicles in the 13-th century as one of the Tartar settlements. The modern city was founded in 1558 as a fortress on a high hill washed by the Volga river. At present Astrakhan is a large industrial and cultural centre with a population of 490 thousand. There are the Drama Theatre, the Puppet Theatre, the History Archaeology Museum, the Gallery of Fine Arts in the city. The main places of interest are the Uspensky Cathedral (1698-1710), the Troitsky Cathedral (16th-18th centuries), the Ioan Zlatoust`s Church (1763).
